History and a Cup of Batok Coffee
by. Ekky Siwabessy

Coffee has always been known as a drink to get rid of tiredness, especially after a long journey. Maybe this is the reason for the popularity of the Pondok Paranginan Restaurant on the Panyabungan-Natal highway. But if it was only for the coffee, what differentiates this restaurant with others of its kind? And that is where this story begins.

Hj. Choriah Nasution opened the Pondok Paranginan Restaurant in 2002. Soon, this restaurant, which serves traditional Mandailing specialities was invaded by visitors from Natal to Panyabungan, even people from Panyabungan itself. The dishes include free-range chicken and smoked gold fish cooked using traditional spices.

In 2007, Hj. Choriah tried out a new menu which dramatically increased the numbers of visitors. The new menu was Batok Coffee or kopi batok. Now, this was a new invention. Kopi Batok can't be found in any dictionary. Kopi Batok is coffee served in a glass made from a small coconut. The coffee is original Madina coffee. Palm sugar is used instead. The spoon, which is a stick of cinnamon, is another detail, making this coffee different from the rest. The coffee is served in an open, cool,  area overlooking the Aek Singolot river. Across the river, wild boars walk unheedingly, through the jungle of rubber trees.

The idea for this unique recipe was inspired by Hj Choriah Nasution's grandparents, who were typical village dwellers, who still obeyed traditional custom. In those times, before going to work the fields, people used to make coffee made only of smoked coffee leaves, "In those times, there wasn't any coffee powder, so they used smoked, dried coffee leaves. The leaves were soaked until they broke up in the boiling water. Instead of water, they used palm sugar water. And because they didn't have a spoon, they used cinnamon sticks taken straight from the bark of the cinnamon tree,"  Hj. Choriah Nasution explains.

The Kopi Batok brand has turned out to be a successful magnet for visitors. The combination of coffee and cinnamon warms the throat. Tiredness evaporates. The spirit to continue the onward journey returns. Thanks to the location of the Pondok Paranginan Restaurant on the shores of the Aek Singolot river, so comfortable and fresh.
